As a hypnotherapist, I do past-life regression therapy and last week I had a very odd and frustrating experience. My mother called me to tell me about a past-life regression she had.
I was not mad that she went to a stranger; trust me, it’s better for our relationship that she does. I was really bothered because this is what she said.
“Jill, I had this amazing past-life regression done. The psychic was telling me all about my past life as an Indian princess …” NOOOO!! Mom! If you start the conversation with “A psychic was telling me …” then it’s a past-life reading and not a regression.” And Indians (Native Americans) did not have “princesses” in the way we know them.
After she said this, I realized even my own mother, whose daughter (me) is a past-life regression hypnotherapist, doesn’t know the different between a reading and a regression so I thought I would explain it to you.
Here it is:
A past-life reading is something psychics do and as a psychic myself I am not knocking it, but as a hypnotherapist I don’t think they are that helpful.
Don’t get me wrong, my ego would LOVE to be told I am really a princess and that’s why things are hard for me in this lifetime. In fact, if I’m being honest, I would probably pay good money to hear that but … that information isn’t really helpful. What would be helpful would be to actually feel what it’s like to be a princess and to experience a life from that place. Which brings us to..
A past-life regression.
With a regression, the therapist actually hypnotizes the person and helps draw their mind back to a past life so they can learn something about themselves. Our unconscious mind usually takes us back to a lifetime whose situation or challenges experienced are having some impact on what is happening now in our life.
For example, if you are feeling stuck (probably the #1 reason people do regressions) then likely you will be drawn back to a lifetime when something similar was happening.
If you are having a challenge with a relationship, you will likely find yourself drawn to a lifetime where you also had problems with these people, maybe even the lifetime where the trouble began. The same is true for fears and phobias.
So how do I know if any of it is real?
Great question, and I get asked this at least once a week. Here’s the truth … We can’t really know for sure.
Personally, and professionally, I believe people are truly experiencing past lives. The information is often very detailed, interesting, and not what the client is expecting to hear.
For example, Mary, a client I had from China, spoke with a heavy accent but when hypnotized suddenly started speaking German even though she claimed later not to know any German. I have known Mary for many years and had no reason to doubt her story. But, can I say for sure that she didn’t just string together some German words she had heard over the years? The scientist in me has to answer honestly here and say “no.” But the situation she came in for got resolved so I feel like it doesn’t really matter.
Arguably, a past-life reading, which is where a psychic tells you who you were, is a lot less work for the client and depending on the talent of the reader, can give you some useful information. But there is so much more to be gained from going back in time and really experiencing the pain, joy, and sometimes fear this earlier version of you had.
So, in my humble opinion as someone who does both for clients, do the extra work and get a past-life regression. You may find yourself experiencing so much more than you could ever get from a reading.
